MojoGenius FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Here you will find everything you ever wanted to know about MojoGenius.

So what is MojoGenius and how can it help me?

MojoGenius is a website which can be used to keep track of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and its set of symptoms referred to as Pre-Menstrual Tension (PMT). With just a few simple bits of information each month we can let you know when the women in your life are going to need that little bit of extra support and understanding. However you can also use MojoGenius to set up birthday reminders for your friends so you will never be embarrassed by not having a card and a gift ever again.

What do these icons I keep seeing on MojoGenius mean?

MojoGenius uses a set of easy to understand icons on the calendars on the website to comunicate to you key events on specific dates. This is what you need to know:

A PMS Day.
A Period Day.
A Birthday.

So what is Pre-Menstrual Syndrome and Pre-Menstrual Tension and why should I be concerned by it?

Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (usually referred to simply as PMS) is a mixture of physical, psychological and emotional symptoms related to a woman's menstrual cycle.

Pre-Menstrual Tension (PMT) refers to symptoms such as mood swings, anxiety, depression and irritability. Generally these symptoms occur in the days leading up to the start of a Period and symptoms vanish afterwards.

It is common for these symptoms to place quite a strain on relationships. The good news is that these symptoms are temporary and will pass.

The abbreviations PMS and PMT are widely used in an interchangeable way to refer to the difficulties associated with this point in the Menstrual Cycle. MojoGenius can provide warnings about these symptoms allowing you to take action to avoid relationship stress.

In MojoGenius keep a keen eye out for this icon as it will warn you about a PMS day:

So what do I have to do to use MojoGenius?

To use MojoGenius you need to first register for the site. To do this click on the Get Started Now button on the main MojoGenius page. Once you're all signed up and logged in you are good to go.

You can then enter any new people into MojoGenius that you are interested in and then enter Event details for them. If you are female you can also enter your own personal events too. Once MojoGenius has the right information for yourself and the other important people in your life it will start to send you warnings.

MojoGenius can warn you about period start days and PMS days. You can turn your friends warnings off from the My People screen (click the edit button and then adjust the tick box). You can turn your own personal warnings on and off from the Edit My Profile screen.

What do you mean by People and why should I add them to MojoGenius?

A Person is someone you add to MojoGenius so you can record useful information about them which we can then use to send you useful reminders. A Person could be your partner, a co-worker, a friend or even a family member.

MojoGenius is usually used to record of menstrual cycle information for the important women in your life and yourself (assuming you're not male) but you can also enter information about the male friends and family in your life. We can then use this to send you optional birthday reminders for them. To create a person you need to enter some basic information about that person:

  • The Person's Name.
  • Date of birth (for birthday reminders).
  • Sex (so we know if we need to track this person's menstrual cycle).
  • We need to know if you want PMS updates for this person (for girls only, ignored for any males you enter).
  • We need to know if you want Period Start updates for this person (once again for girls only, ignored for any men you enter).
When you are logged in you can add a Person using the Add Person button on the left of the page.

What is an Event?

To provide you with warnings MojoGenius needs you to regularly enter information on events into the system. An Event is one of the following:
A PMS Day.
A Period Day.

We recommend that you enter information on each person (including yourself if you want updates about your cycle) at least once a month to keep the PMS and Period Start predictions accurate. Entering period start days alone will usually produce very accurate results. Otherwise the more day events of the other types (period day and PMS) you enter the more accurate the predictions will be.

What is the best kind of Event to enter for an accurate PMS and Period Start Predictions?

To get the best results from MojoGenius the events you should try to add are Period Start days. By only adding Period Start Days MojoGenius will be able to predict future PMS days and Period days with a high degree of accuracy.

However it may often be the case that you don't know the Period Start Day but do have other information. You can also enter a Period Day (where you know a girl is on her Period but don't know when it started) or a PMS day. This is not quite as accurate as entering as a Period Start Day, but the more information you enter the better the predictions will be as MojoGenius can use previous information to refine its predictions.

For example if you have entered information on two Period days and three PMS days for a person you will get a more accurate prediction than for a single Period Day.

As a general rule Period Day information is more useful to MojoGenius than PMS days. Also please bear in mind that there are some very rare cases where a woman's cycle is so unpredictable that even MojoGenius is unable to provide accurate warnings.

How do I enter an Event into MojoGenius?

There are several pages you can enter Event data from within the MojoGenius website:
  • The Home Page
  • Detailed Outlook Page
  • My People Page
We suggest that Event data is generally best entered from the Detailed Outlook Page as this gives you a clear visual representation of a calendar.

Okay, so I have a warning email, what should I do?

MojoGenius sends out the following kinds of warning emails:
  • A birthday warning.
  • A Period Day warning
  • A PMS Day warning
Warnings are sent out a few days before an Event happens and then a further email is then sent out on the day. If it's a birthday warning perhaps send a card?

If it is a PMS Day warning and this lady is important in your life then we suggest you read the Someone important to me is about to suffer from PMS, what can I do? section of this FAQ!

Can I use MojoGenius to prevent pregnancy?

We strongly recommend that MojoGenius is not used to prevent pregnancy using rhythm methods. Such methods have a high failure rate and whilst MojoGenius may allow better tracking of and prediction of menstrual cycles, it is inherently risky as MojoGenius makes probability calculations that potentially could be incorrect!

In short, it is not a good idea.

Can I use MojoGenius as an aid to get pregnant?

In principle yes, however there are other websites better suited to this. However be sure to still keep using MojoGenius to keep track of your PMS and Period Days! We would miss you if you left.

I am suffering from PMS, what can I do?

If you are suffering from PMS there are steps you can take to help ease your symptoms:
  • Regular Exercise - this counteracts fluid retention and releases endorphins.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat well - the lack of certain minerals and vitamins in your diet could affect your symptoms.
  • Avoid salty deep fried foods.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks (such as tea and coffee) and sugary drinks.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
There is anecdotal evidence that good quality dark chocolate can help ease the symptoms of PMS. It's possible that this is a placebo effect, but many women swear by this.

There are certain risk factors that can have an effect on your PMS. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Your diet.
  • High intake of caffeine.
  • Stress.
  • A History of depression.
  • Tobacco use.
  • Family History.
If you're PMS symptoms are affecting your everyday life its worthwhile discussing your symptoms with a health practitioner. There is a great deal of good advice that they can provide, and in more severe cases there are medications that can be prescribed.

Women's Health Concern provide some good information on PMS which can be found here. Also the UK based National Association for Premenstrual Syndrome (NAPS) have a website which can be found here.

I, or someone I know, don't seem to suffer from PMS, is there anything wrong?

First things first, don't worry. Some women don't suffer from PMS. Nobody knows why (but medical science is working to find out!).

Interestingly we did discover that during our early testing of MojoGenius women who claimed not to get PMS were noticing symptoms at the same time as MojoGenius predicted. So even if you don't think you get PMS its well worth joining the site just to be sure.

Someone important to me is about to suffer from PMS, what can I do?

MojoGenius is a great system and will warn you about PMS. But then what, what action should you take to help the special woman (or possibly women) in your life?

Here are some suggestions that may help. Please remember that there is no one thing that works in all cases, every woman is unique and you will have to judge which of these suggestions will work best for you both.

  • Above all be considerate.
  • Cook for her - diet is closely related to PMS symptoms so cook something nice and healthy and avoid salty and fried foods.
  • Buy some good quality dark chocolate, anecdotal evidence suggests that this can ease symptoms.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol together at this time; it can make PMS symptoms worse.
  • If you live together why not do the cleaning? Our research indicates that arguments about cleaning the home (especially the bathroom) are particularly common about this time.
  • Consider cancelling some social engagements, if she is not at her best it might be nice to share a night on the sofa with a good DVD.
  • Have an early night; a good night's sleep can help ease symptoms.
  • Under no circumstances tell her you think she has PMS or that you have received a warning from MojoGenius. Trust us on this, it's not a good thing to do!
This list is by no means comprehensive, but gives a flavour of suggestions that can work.

A key thing to remember is not to disregard any arguments you might have during a PMS mood swing. Whilst the argument might well be made in an emotional manner, you can bet your back teeth that the point she is making is valid and annoys her when she is not experiencing PMS, so take note!

I can't change the email address I used to register with MojoGenius. Why?

MojoGenius does not currently allow you to change the email address that you registered your account with. This is primarily a security measure to prevent bad people from hijacking your MojoGenius account and associating it with an email address belonging to them. However we realise this is annoying and we will be looking at ways to associate new email addresses with your MojoGenius account at some point in the future.
